Transparent QR Code Generator
Enter your URL or content below. Set the background color to transparent, customise the foreground, then download your alpha-channel PNG.
To generate a transparent QR code, type transparent in the background color field, or use the API with background=transparent. The color picker above sets a solid fallback; the text field accepts the keyword.
PNG, JPG, or WebP. Logo is embedded in the center of the QR code. Use High error correction for best results.

What is a Transparent QR Code?
A QR code that blends seamlessly into any design, without a white box getting in the way.
A transparent QR code is a standard QR code image exported with an alpha channel — meaning the background pixels are fully transparent rather than filled with white or any other solid color. The result is a PNG file where only the dark data modules are visible, and the background shows through whatever surface the image is placed on.
This is made possible by the PNG format, which supports an 8-bit alpha channel per pixel. JPEG does not support
transparency, which is why PNG is the only correct format for transparent QR codes. When you use QRMint's
generator, set the background color field to transparent (type the word directly into the
hex field), and the API will output a fully alpha-transparent PNG. You can also call our
REST API directly with the parameter
background=transparent.
Use a transparent QR code when you need to layer it over a photograph, a gradient, a textured background, or a product mockup. A solid white background would create an unsightly white rectangle; a transparent background lets the design breathe. For materials with a light-colored background, use a dark foreground color. For dark backgrounds, switch to a light or neon foreground color to keep the code scannable. The QR data itself is unchanged — scanners read the contrast between modules regardless of what background they sit on.
When to Use a Transparent QR Code
Any situation where a white box would clash with your design.
Product Packaging
Place a transparent QR code directly over a product photo, label texture, or branded background without interrupting the visual design. Customers scan for ingredients, instructions, or a loyalty page while the packaging retains its premium, uncluttered look.
Business Cards
Embed a transparent QR code on a dark, textured, or full-bleed business card design. The code floats over the background with no white box breaking the layout. Link to your portfolio, LinkedIn profile, or contact vCard for an instant digital handshake on every card.
Website Overlays
Overlay a transparent QR code onto a hero image, banner, or video thumbnail on your website. Because the background is fully transparent, the code sits flush with any CSS background without requiring extra styling or white-fill workarounds. Ideal for promotional landing pages and event sites.
Branded Merchandise
Print on T-shirts, tote bags, mugs, and promotional items where the base material color varies. A transparent QR code adapts to any substrate color automatically, meaning one artwork file works across your entire merch range without manual background-color adjustments for each product variant.
Event Materials
Place transparent QR codes on event posters, tickets, and programs that already have rich background imagery. Attendees scan for schedules, maps, or check-in links while the printed design stays intact. Works beautifully on gradient or photographic poster backgrounds that would clash with a white fill.
Social Media Posts
Insert a transparent QR code into Instagram stories, Twitter cards, or YouTube thumbnails without breaking the visual composition. Compose in Photoshop, Figma, or Canva by dropping the transparent PNG straight onto your design layer. No erasing white backgrounds or extra masking steps required.
How to Create a Transparent QR Code
Three steps. Under a minute. No account needed.
1. Enter Your Content
Select a QR code type (URL, text, vCard, WiFi, or any other supported format) and enter the content you want to encode. Paste a URL, type a phone number, or fill in contact details — the generator handles all supported payload formats.
2. Set Background to Transparent
In the Background color field, clear the hex value and type transparent. Alternatively,
choose a dark foreground color so the modules stand out clearly when placed on any surface. You can also
call the API with background=transparent for programmatic generation.
3. Download PNG
Click Generate and download the PNG file. The exported image includes a full alpha channel — the background is completely transparent. Open it in Photoshop, Figma, Canva, Illustrator, or any other tool and place it directly over your design.
Why Use QRMint for Transparent QR Codes
The most capable free transparent QR code generator. No limits, no account, no catch.
Alpha Channel PNG
Export QR codes as true alpha-transparent PNGs. The background is fully cleared, not just white or a solid color. Drop the file straight into any design tool and the transparency is preserved without any extra steps or manual background removal.
Custom Foreground Colors
Choose any foreground color, including neon, gradient, or brand-matched hex values. With a transparent background, the foreground color is the only visual element — pick one that contrasts well with the surface your QR code will be placed on to ensure reliable scanning.
Logo Embedding
Upload your brand logo (PNG, JPG, or WebP) and it will be centered inside the transparent QR code. Use High error correction to keep the code scannable with a logo overlay. Your logo and transparent background combine for a fully branded, placement-ready asset.
High-Resolution Output
Export up to 2048×2048 px PNG with transparency intact at every resolution. Your transparent QR code stays pixel-perfect whether it lands on a small social post or a large-format print file. No quality loss, no compression artifacts, no resampling required.
Transparent QR Code FAQ
How do I make a QR code with a transparent background?
Use the generator above and type transparent directly into the background color text
field (the hex input next to the color picker). Click Generate and QRMint will produce a PNG with a fully
transparent background and your chosen foreground color. You can also use the
REST API by passing the query parameter
background=transparent to any QR code generation endpoint. No signup or API key is required.
What file format supports transparent QR codes?
Only PNG supports full alpha channel transparency. JPEG compresses images without an alpha channel and always produces a solid background. SVG also supports transparency natively since it is a vector format, but for raster use cases PNG is the standard. QRMint's transparent output is always a PNG file with an 8-bit alpha channel, compatible with every major design tool including Photoshop, Figma, Illustrator, Canva, and Affinity Designer.
Will a transparent QR code still scan correctly?
Yes, as long as there is sufficient contrast between the QR code modules and the surface they are placed on. QR code scanners detect the contrast between light and dark areas — they do not require a specific background color. A black QR code on a transparent background placed over a white surface scans identically to a black-on-white QR code. Ensure your foreground color contrasts clearly with the underlying design for reliable scanning in all lighting conditions.
Can I use transparent QR codes for print?
Yes. Transparent PNG files work in all major print-ready design applications. Place the PNG on your Photoshop, InDesign, or Illustrator file as a layer over your background artwork. The alpha channel is preserved through the export pipeline for CMYK printing. Export at 2048×2048 px for high-DPI print quality. For large-format printing over 30 cm, consider using the SVG option for infinite scalability instead.
Can I add a logo to a transparent QR code?
Absolutely. Upload your logo using the Logo upload control in the generator above. QRMint will embed it centered in the QR code while keeping the background fully transparent. Set error correction to High (30%) to ensure the code remains scannable with the logo covering the centre modules. The resulting PNG has both a transparent background and your embedded logo — ready to drop into any design.
Need other QR code types? QRMint also generates URL, vCard, Email, Phone, SMS, WiFi, Event, and Payment QR codes — all free, no signup, with the same full styling options.
