What is a PDF QR Code?
The simplest way to bridge printed materials and digital documents.
A PDF QR code is a standard URL QR code that points directly to a hosted PDF file. When someone scans the code with their smartphone camera, their browser opens the document immediately — no app downloads, no file transfers, no typing long URLs. It is the fastest way to connect a physical object (a business card, a product box, a conference badge) to a digital document.
The workflow is straightforward: host your PDF on any publicly accessible URL (Google Drive, Dropbox, your own server, or a service like PDFSpark), paste the link into QRMint, and download a fully styled QR code in PNG or SVG format at up to 2048×2048 px resolution — sharp enough for business cards or exhibition banners alike.
You can also use our free REST API to generate PDF QR codes programmatically. A single GET request is all it takes, making it easy to automate QR code creation for invoices, reports, or any document pipeline. No API key is ever required.
When to Use a PDF QR Code
Anywhere a printed surface needs to link to a full digital document.
Restaurant Menus
Print a QR code on table tents, coasters, or window stickers that links to your full digital PDF menu. Update dishes and prices by replacing the hosted file — the QR code stays the same. Guests get the latest menu every time they scan, with no reprinting costs.
Resumes & CVs
Add a small QR code to your printed resume or business card that links to your full CV in PDF format. Recruiters scan and instantly access your complete work history, portfolio, and references — no manual typing of URLs, no lost paper copies. Stand out at career fairs and networking events.
Product Catalogs
Place a QR code on product packaging, shelf tags, or trade show materials that links to a complete product specification PDF. Buyers get detailed specs, safety data sheets, and installation guides without needing a bulky printed manual. Update the PDF as products evolve.
Education
Embed QR codes in classroom handouts, textbooks, or lecture slides that link to course syllabi, supplementary readings, and assignment sheets in PDF format. Students scan with their phones and have the materials saved on their device instantly. No more lost handouts.
Corporate Documents
Add QR codes to printed reports, invoices, compliance certificates, and training manuals. Staff and auditors scan to access the digital original, ensuring they always have the latest version. Ideal for ISO documentation, annual reports, and policy handbooks.
How to Create a PDF QR Code
Three steps. Under a minute. No account needed.
1. Host Your PDF
Upload your PDF to any hosting service — Google Drive (with public sharing enabled), Dropbox, Amazon S3, your own web server, or use PDFSpark to convert HTML to PDF first. Copy the direct URL to the file.
2. Generate the QR Code
Paste the PDF URL into the generator above. Customize colours to match your brand, choose a module shape, apply the "Document" frame template for a professional look, and optionally embed your logo.
3. Download & Distribute
Download as PNG (ideal for digital screens and standard print) or SVG (infinitely scalable for large-format print). Add the QR code to business cards, brochures, packaging, or posters — anyone who scans it opens your PDF instantly.

PDF QR Code FAQ
How do I create a QR code that links to a PDF?
First, upload your PDF to any publicly accessible hosting service (Google Drive, Dropbox, your own web server, etc.) and obtain the direct URL. Then paste that URL into the QRMint generator above, customise the colours and style to your liking, and click Generate. Download the resulting QR code as PNG or SVG and place it on any printed or digital material. When scanned, it opens the PDF directly in the user's browser.
Where should I host my PDF file?
You can host your PDF anywhere that provides a public URL. Popular free options include Google Drive
(set sharing to "Anyone with the link"), Dropbox (use the direct link format by changing
?dl=0 to ?dl=1), and GitHub Pages. For professional use, consider your own
web server, Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, or a service like
FreeKit for free instant HTML hosting.
You can also use PDFSpark to convert
HTML content to PDF first.
Can I update the PDF without changing the QR code?
Yes, as long as the URL stays the same. The QR code encodes the URL, not the file contents. If you replace the PDF file at the same hosting URL (overwrite the file on your server, update the Google Drive file, etc.), every existing QR code will automatically point to the updated document. This is one of the biggest advantages of PDF QR codes — update once, and every printed code reflects the change.
What is the maximum file size for the linked PDF?
QRMint does not impose any file size limit because the QR code simply encodes a URL, not the PDF itself. The file size limit depends entirely on your hosting provider. Google Drive supports files up to 5 TB per file, Dropbox up to 2 GB on the free plan, and most web servers handle files of any reasonable size. For the best user experience, keep PDFs under 10 MB so they load quickly on mobile devices over cellular connections.
Can I track how many people scan my PDF QR code?
QRMint generates static QR codes, so there is no built-in scan tracking. However, you can easily add tracking by using a URL shortener like LinkShrink to wrap your PDF URL before encoding it in the QR code. The shortened URL will log every click, giving you scan counts, geographic data, and referrer information. Alternatively, use UTM parameters on your PDF URL and track scans in Google Analytics.
Need other QR code types? QRMint also generates URL, vCard, Email, Phone, SMS, WiFi, Event, Payment, and Location QR codes — all free, no signup, with the same full styling options.
